Creative Freedom

It's an interesting subject, creative freedom being what I've pushed towards since I was about a kid, I didn't want to limit myself in anyway, it's the thinking that's derived from my serving tray and the plasticine worlds I created in it, nothing was impossible, and I created each and every part of those worlds from my imagination, I've spoke about it as a good thing in the first post of the 'Master Of Plasticine' blog series, and in past blog posts. But maybe it's the reason that at 27 years old with a wife and two kids, I still can't really decide how to make a living from what I do, partly because I have no idea what I do, and that's partly because I don't want anything to be off-limits. I think I've briefly touched on this idea that all through my life, through out all the disciplines of art etc I've done, creative thinking has been the one thing that has been consistent throughout, over the Christmas holidays and a bit before that I have been deep diving into the creative process, and it's been incredibly interesting to find myself where I am now.

I haven't been updating the blog as I go through my research, every bit of time I've had I've been researching and gathering information, time spent writing that up into a blog post would have distracted me from my frenzy of ideas generation, so over the next however many posts I will attempt to catch up with what I've been looking at for the last month, what I've been doing, and what I've discovered.

So I have set out a rough blueprint for this module/experiment

It's pretty simple, I let my mind go where it wants to go..

So, for example, I'm currently working on as a production designer/ world builder on a tv series my friend Tom is currently in the middle of writing, were testing out how collaboration in a visual way can help in the writing process, usually the production designer doesn't come on until the scripts are finished, especially in low budget filmmaking, so we want to see how the writing can change if the visuals are available and being developed at the time of writing, and especially with a fantasy-esque series like this one, the world building elements really inform the writing and vice versa, I'm designing bits that Tom's writing in later on in the series, and were working through the ideas in tandem, it's interesting to see the series develop in this way, anyway, my rule is that if I'm working on this project, then something inspires me about another project I'm working on, don't hesitate, jump over to my castle set project, which is a project inspired by my daughter and Cas Holman. My daughter asked for a pink castle for Christmas, and I thought I'd be able to build a better one, that can inspire creative thinking rather than just being a dolls house painted to look like a castle, there's nothing wrong with that, but it's the same play as you get with a dolls house, I want to see if I can make something more interesting.

My second 'rule' is to allow research to happen, as you'll see later on in these blog posts my research enters sports genes, neuroscience and psychology, my research has never gone this deep before, and it's only because I allowed my research to go where it wanted to go, and there's been something about not keeping myself bound to being 'something', a filmmaker, a sculptor, etc.. being free to move around has taken me to places where I never would have got to otherwise.

So to recap, this project is overall an experiment in creative practice, I will be giving myself permission to jump from one project to another, to start new things, and abandon projects as and when I please, and I will be allowing my research to go down whatever path it wants to go down. There's no final outcome, except for what I will learn from it, individual projects may or may not come to and 'end' within this experiment, but the experiment itself is a constant continuation, and will be playful and experimental in nature.

I will try my best to document as much of the different processes as possible going forward..
